Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney is about Greg Heffley and his adventures (and misadventures) as a middle schooler. The story is told via Greg's journal (NOT a diary), and is complete with his own illustrations! Poor Greg - when he's not protecting himself from getting the "Cheese Touch", he has to deal with getting chased by high schoolers bent on stealing his Halloween candy, getting kicked off of safety patrols for chasing the kindergartners with fresh worms, having his dad smash up his snowman head (after he kicked his younger brother's snowman at his brother's head), or having his mom substitute for his teacher. These are just a few of the hilarious events that happen throughout this hilarious book about a wimpy kid.

OK, so this book is so funny that I burst out laughing during the middle of silent reading time and completely disrupted the entire library!! I have seen so many of my students reading the entire series, but this is the first time I've read any of them. I finished the book in a matter of a few hours, simply because it was so amusing and engaging! I totally understand why kids like this one!

I love Diary of a Wimpy Kid!!!
It's just so funny how Greg gets in all these situations...
Greg's mom makes him get a diary, which he'd rather call a journal. Early in the book, the cheese touch is explained. The cheese touch started all off with a stinky piece of cheese on the blacktop at recess. Someone touched it, and he touched someone else - starting the Cheese Touch. To protect yourself, you had to cross your fingers. (At my elementary, someone started up the cheese touch too. I recall taping my fingers crossed together to avoid getting the Cheese Touch.)Also in the first section, theres Halloween, wrestling, and acting in the Wizard of Oz. While Greg and his friend Rowley were trick or treating, a group of teens ambush them! They hide out at Greg's grandmothers house and tease the teens by making faces and funny noises. When they escape, they come back the next day to see Greg's grandmother's house TP'd. On Christmas, Greg gets very few presents he would like. Rowley bought Greg a big wheel, or a trycicle. While Greg throws a football to Rowley while he rides on it, Rowley breaks his arm. Because of it he's surrounded by girls at school which gets Greg angry. Greg and Rowly join the Safety Patrol with the responsibility of walking kindergarteners home. Greg gets kicked off for chasing them with a worm. After Greg gets kicked off, Rowley starts ignoring him and they slowly drift apart. Rowley starts hanging out with other people, and when they go to Rowley's house, Greg tries to make Rowley jealous by spending the night at Fregley's. It turns into a disaster when Fregley goes crazy and Greg runs away at night. Nearing the end of the school year, Rowley's comic gets entered in the school newspaper even though the comic was Greg's idea. Greg tells Rowley to list him as co-creater, but Rowley denies that Greg had anything to do with it. They're ready to fight, but the teens they messed with on Halloween show up. They force Rowley and Greg to eat the cheese, but Greg escapes by saying hes allergic to dairy products. So Rowley eats it. The next day when people start questioning one another where the cheese went, Greg explains that he removed it. The way he said it, it sounded like he touched the cheese. For the rest of the year, there was an imaginary bubble around Greg and he and Rowley became best friends again.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is one of my favorite books. I can read them in one day, but they are long enough to be fit for kids my age. I've also read the second, third, and fourth book! I'm going to read the fifth book when it comes out. I like this book because it is VERY funny, has good characters, and is sort of like a comic book. I really like the pictures that go with the story; they are the funniest part. I wonder what will happen in the fifth book?

One day at Kids Safari at my elementary I was playing www.funbrain.com and there was an ad for Diary Of a Wimpy Kid. At first I thought it sounded dumb and childish. In fact I still had until just a few weeks ago. I was done with my chores and I didn't feel like going down stairs and calling a friend so I went into my 9-year-old sisters room. I was looking at her bookshelf and thought I would give it a try, I already knew that many of my friends read this series and absolutely loved it, I started reading the first few pages of the book and found my self laughing-out-loud! It was so funny I couldn't put it down, I read the whole book in an hour! It was one of my top picks! I don't have any cons about this book at all, I can't wait till the fifth one comes out, I've read all of them in the time span of about a week!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a book about a boy- Greg- who is constantly tortured by his older brother and constantly annoyed by his younger brother. In this book, Greg is facing a problem with his mom buying him a journal that said "Diary" on it, when he specifically told her not to. In this journal, he writes about his experiences in 6th grade. For him, 6th grade is basically the land of "Lord of the Flies".

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes reading funny stories about a kid who is annoyed constantly who thinks he is all awesome and will become famous. (He is really just a jerk.) I would also recommend this for anyone who likes stories about kids in middle school being treated unfairly. (He is treated unfairly because of his brother.) I recommend the whole series, they are all basically about the same thing.
