This was an awesome story with an unexpected twist at the end! I absolutely loved all of the adventure and Sage's antics. This is the first book in The Ascendance Trilogy. I cannot wait until book two comes out! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy and adventure stories, particularly books like the Eragon Series, Faerie Wars Series, Looking Glass Wars Series, etc.

The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen
The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen is about Sage, an orphan boy who is great at making his own way in the world. Whether it's stealing, lying, hiding or simply making mischief, Sage is an expert! It's a good thing, too, because when he is sold by the head of the orphanage where he's been staying to a ruthless man named Connor, Sage has to use all of his street smarts to stay alive. Connor collected 4 orphans, all with characteristics similar to the long lost Prince Jaron - youngest son of Eckbert, the King of Carthya. His plan? To train them all and select the best "false prince" to take over the kingdom now that King Eckbert, his wife and eldest son have been murdered. Sage wants absolutely no part in this plan, but knows if he doesn't go along with Connor he'll be killed. Sage also knows no matter which orphan is chosen to become Prince Jaron, the other three will be killed. Sage has to use all of the skills he learned on the streets to not only beat the other boys for the title of prince, but to try to figure out Connor's plan and stop him from rising to power.

Nowhere Girl by A. J. Paquette
Nowhere Girl by A. J. Paquette is about Luchi, a thirteen year old girl who was born and raised by her mother in a prison in Thailand. When her mother dies, the warden allows Luchi to stay in the prison for several months, but eventually, she has to leave. Luchi doesn't know anything about her father nor any other family she may have except one tiny clue provided by her mother's cellmate: the name Payne Industries. The warden's nephew, Luchi's old playmate and friend, agrees to drive her to the city where she plans to research what she knows and find some way to reach family. Unfortunately, Luchi was not well equipped to make it outside the prison. She speaks the language and knows the customs, but she's a skinny blonde girl who just doesn't fit in. She gets taken advantage of, stolen from, and left with little hope. Things start to unravel and Luchi learns about her mother and father's past and exactly what happened to put her mother in jail. She does meet up with family, but in a most unexpected way.
This was a very interesting story. I really felt for Luchi, being so naive and alone. As a reader, I was able to predict what would happen to her that she was unaware was even possible. Though the story about her mother and father turned this realistic adventure into a murder/mystery story that will appeal to people who enjoy all genres!

Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George
When I read this book, I couldn't help but feel as though I already knew the story. About half way through, I realized it was the folktale I was familiar with, not this particular version of it! I really liked this book. It was a great fantasy adventure. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys books by Shannon Hale.

Liesl & Po by Lauren Oliver
This was an AWESOME story! There were many different side stories that all came together by the end. This is not your typical fairy tale/fantasy novel! All in all, a fantastic middle grade novel.

Incarceron by Catherine Fisher
Claudia, while raiding her father's study with the help of her personal Sapient, Jared, finds a matching key. There is a direct link between the keys and Finn and Claudia meet. Claudia is promised to the younger half-brother of the former prince of their land. The first born prince, and true heir died in an accident several years prior. Claudia does not want to marry Caspar, but know she must follow "Protocol". However, Claudia is also convinced that Giles, the rightful heir died under strange circumstances and is determined to learn the truth, without attracting the attention of her father and the evil queen. Together, Finn and Claudia work to find escape from Incarceron, rid the world of the Protocol rules, and find out the truth about what happened to their kingdom. Will they succeed?
I absolutely loved this book! I cannot wait to read the sequel, Sapphique! I loved the way the book alternated between Claudia's story and Finn's story, and how the two came together in the end. I also liked the idea that the prison was its own living entity and completely in charge of the prisoners and completely unaware of what happened on the outside. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good science fiction, fantasy or adventure novel.

Illegal by Bettina Restrepo
This was a great book! It reminded me a little of La Linea by Ann Jaramillo. Both show how desperate people can be to take care of their families and how important family truly is. They also show the dangers in crossing the border illegally and the lengths people will go to get across.

Cloaked by Alex Flinn
This was an amazing book! It's the kind of story you just want to hug when you shut the back cover. I loved the way the author wove many fairy tales into the story. I especially liked the author's note that summarized each of the less familiar fairy tales so I could make connections to the story itself. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fairy tales, fantasy, and/or romance novels.

The Scorch Trials by James Dashner
This book was amazing! Just like The Maze Runner, it was action packed from beginning to end. I couldn't put it down! I especially liked the different twists and turns the author added in to throw the reader off. I can't wait for book 3 to come out!!! I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a good science fiction novel. Fans of The Hunger Games series would really like this series as well.

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo
This was a very good book. I didn't realize how sad it would be! I really enjoyed all of the adventures Edward went on throughout the course of the book. It was interesting to see how he changed as a result of his journey. I recommend this book to everyone!

The Search for WondLa by Tony DiTerlizzi
This was a really interesting book! I absolutely loved the illustrations and the interactive website where I could view 3-D versions of the maps of Orbona. I am excited to read the second book so I can find out what happens to Eva Nine and Rovender next!

Shapeshifter's Quest by Dena Landon
This was an awesome book! I was completely enthralled the entire time I read it. I was immediately immersed in the world of the shapeshifters, as if it were my own reality. I couldn't put it down from beginning to end. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy!

Stardust by Neil Gaiman
This book was great! I have never been a fan of fairy tales, but this one was awesome. I absolutely loved the way everything came together at the end - all of my questions were answered... no loose ends! I read this book with my online book club of 8th grade girls. We plan to watch the movie version later this month.

La Linea by Ann Jaramillo
I liked this book. There were a lot of Spanish words and phrases included within the text, which made it feel more realistic. There is an author's note in the back which explains a bit about the story - while it is fiction, it is based on real events. This is one of the 2009-2010 Maud Hart Lovelace Nominees.

Seekers: The Quest Begins by Erin Hunter
This was a good adventure story! Each chapter is told through a different bears' perspective. I learned a lot about the different types of bears, their habitat, and their habits. I really liked the way the world was described through the eyes of the young bears. The reader has to make a lot of inferences, as the names of common things (like guns, roads, cars) are different. For example, the bears called guns, "fire sticks," but the author doesn't offer an explanation of the term - just a description of the gun. This is the first book in the series.

The Alchemyst by Michael Scott
This is the first book in a new series by Michael Scott and I absolutely loved it! There is so much legend, myth, and folklore within this book - it is amazing. Michael Scott offers easy explanations for many of the common stories, creatures, and people within. The stories of Nicholas and Perry Flamel and John Dee within the story were taken from the factual information that exists about these real people! This was an excellent blend of fiction, fact, and legend. I will definitely read the rest of the books in this series!

Alone on a Wide Wide Sea by Michael Morpurgo
I absolutely loved this book. The first part of the story is told through Arthur's eyes, as a sort of memoir. Although it is fiction, it is very easy to believe that Arthur truly exists and that the reader has the unique opportunity to see his life and story through his eyes. The second part of the story is told in a similar way through the eyes of his daughter, Allie. This details her journey to England and what she finds when she finally arrives. I laughed out loud at parts of this and cried along with Allie during a particularly heart wrenching experience at sea. This is one of my favorites!

The Land of the Silver Apples by Nancy Farmer
I really enjoyed this book! It took me a little while to get back into the story, as it's been over a year since I read The Sea of Trolls, but Nancy Farmer gives plenty of clues that help with that. There is a really interesting appendix at the end of this book that describes many of the interesting elements of this story, including the different religions present, symbols used by the picts and Thorgil's shipmates, and background information about St. Filian's Well and Din Guardi.
